A man, pretending to be a police officer from Lucknow, conned a 66-year-old grocery shop owner in Thane district, Maharashtra, out of Rs 18 lakh. This was under the guise of protecting him from a nonexistent criminal case, an official reported on Monday.

Between May 9 and 30, the imposter contacted the grocer in Badlapur, claiming to be an officer from Alambagh police station in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh. He convinced the victim that a money laundering case had been filed against him and that he should pay Rs 18,02,999 to avoid arrest, according to the Badlapur police.

The fraudster allegedly instructed the victim to deposit the amount in various accounts. When the victim later confirmed with the Lucknow police, no such case existed. Following the victim's complaint, the Badlapur police registered an FIR against the unknown suspect on Saturday.
