Maharashtra’s cyber police have filed a case against popular YouTuber Dhruv Rathee, stemming from a parody account's post on X. The account, @dhruvrahtee, allegedly claimed that Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla's daughter cleared the UPSC exam without appearing for it, a senior official confirmed on Saturday.
The parody account explains in its bio that it is not associated with the original @dhruv_rathee account. Despite this, police registered a complaint by a relative of Birla, leading to charges under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) for defamation, intentional insult intending to provoke a breach of peace, and the IT Act.
Addressing concerns that the fake message came from a parody account, not Rathee’s actual account, the official stated, “We are investigating the matter.” The parody account subsequently tweeted an apology, stating that it had deleted all posts about Anjali Birla under the directives of Maharashtra Cyber police.
