Spanish police have intercepted a massive shipment of four metric tons of cocaine hidden in rice sacks at Barcelona's port, effectively dismantling a sophisticated drug ring that conducted operations in Spain, Paraguay, and Britain.
Processed into powder in Asuncion, Paraguay, the drugs were placed in plastic bags and concealed within hand-sewn rice sacks for their illicit journey to Europe. The discovery was only made in July, though the containers had arrived earlier in the year when the smugglers attempted to relocate them.
Authorities in Paraguay and Britain also contributed to the crackdown, confiscating an additional five metric tons of cocaine in recent raids. British police seized two tons of cocaine in March at Southampton's port, destined for a Spanish firm under scrutiny. The collaborative effort has led to the arrest of ten individuals, including eight in Spain and two in Paraguay.
