Vladimir Kara-Murza: Surviving Psychological Torture in Russian Jail

Russian dissident Vladimir Kara-Murza, released in a prisoner swap, revealed illegal psychological torture during his imprisonment. He was allowed minimal contact with his family and was banned from attending church. Kara-Murza also spent 10 months in solitary confinement, significantly longer than legally allowed.

Russian dissident Vladimir Kara-Murza, released from jail on Thursday in a major prisoner swap, disclosed that he and others faced illegal psychological torture while imprisoned.

At a news conference in Bonn, Kara-Murza revealed that he was permitted to speak with his wife just once and his children twice over more than two years of imprisonment. A practicing Christian, he was prohibited from attending church services.

He also spent 10 months in solitary confinement, a period much longer than permitted by law, he stated.
