SC Upholds LG's Power to Appoint MCD Aldermen

In a significant ruling on Monday, the Supreme Court upheld the authority of the Delhi lieutenant governor to appoint aldermen to the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), a move likely to benefit the BJP in upcoming standing committee elections.

The decision places the Congress in a pivotal position, as its support could determine whether the BJP or Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) gains a majority in the standing committee. This committee holds significant power over policy approvals involving expenditure over Rs 5 crore.

The controversy began when the Delhi government challenged the appointment of 10 aldermen by LG V K Saxena, alleging the appointments were made without consulting the council of ministers.
