The CBI has apprehended an assistant director of the ED for allegedly accepting a Rs 20 lakh bribe from a Mumbai-based bullion dealer. The bribe was solicited under the threat of arresting the dealer's son in a money laundering case, officials reported on Thursday.

The officer, arrested on Wednesday, is facing immediate suspension and repatriation to his original department. ED Assistant Director Sandeep Singh, acting as the 'Search Warrant Authorised Officer', searched the residence of Vipul Thakkar, who was suspected of money laundering.

Although Singh was not the official investigating officer, he allegedly misrepresented himself and demanded the bribe. The CBI found the allegations credible and arrested Singh. The ED has also registered a case against Singh, and both agencies are collecting evidence related to the case.
