The BJP on Wednesday demanded that West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee resign in the wake of the rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata. They accused her of siding with the accused rather than the victim.
BJP national spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia alleged that Banerjee failed to fulfill her moral duty, which endangered the safety of women in the state. He cited the Calcutta High Court's critical remarks and its decision to hand over the investigation to the CBI.
Bhatia accused Banerjee of initially trying to save the accused. He pointed out that the police misled the victim's parents and failed to lodge an FIR promptly. The state government's actions were viewed as attempts to shield the accused and destroy evidence.
