A former Russian defence official was ordered detained on fraud charges Thursday, marking the latest high-profile arrest in an apparent sweeping investigation into abuse of office at the highest levels of military leadership.
Former Deputy Defence Minister Pavel Popov faces up to 10 years in prison if charged and convicted, according to Russian state news agencies. The accusations revolve around business activities at Moscow's Patriot Park, a project designed to foster patriotism among Russia's youth and showcase Soviet and Russian military history.
Popov's case follows the arrests of seven other top military officials on charges ranging from fraud to bribery, including Deputy Defence Minister Timur Ivanov. Analysts believe these arrests signal a crackdown on corruption within the defence ministry.
