A UN convoy carrying polio vaccines for Gaza's children was detained by the Israeli military for over eight hours on Monday. The military cited intelligence indicating the presence of Palestinian suspects aboard the vehicles.
According to Philippe Lazzarini, head of UNRWA, the convoy faced threats and heavy damage from Israeli bulldozers at the Wadi Gaza checkpoint. All UN staff members were eventually released and returned safely to their base.
The Israeli military refuted claims that the convoy was part of a vaccination campaign, asserting it was involved in personnel exchange. UNRWA disputes this, adding uncertainty to the continuation of the crucial vaccination effort.
