Thierry Breton, a prominent French business executive, resigned from his post within the European Union's executive branch on Monday, citing leadership issues with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. This development comes as von der Leyen assembles her new team for the next five-year term.
Breton, who has clashed with tech mogul Elon Musk, suggested that von der Leyen went behind his back to appoint another French official to the next commission. He described this as "further testimony to questionable governance" and stated it made him feel unable to continue his duties.
Von der Leyen accepted the resignation, while France quickly nominated Stéphane Séjourné as Breton's replacement. The new commission faces delays and must undergo approval by the European Parliament before commencing work, which was initially scheduled for November 1.
