The US Coast Guard on Monday tracked a group of Russian naval vessels entering US waters off the coast of Alaska in an apparent effort to avoid sea ice. This action is permitted under international rules and customs.
A US Coast Guard cutter crew observed the Russian military vessels, comprising two submarines, a frigate, and a tug boat, crossing into the US Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) and venturing approximately 30 miles (48 kilometers) inside the area. The encounter occurred nearly 60 miles (100 kilometers) northwest of Point Hope.
Rear Adm. Megan Dean stated that the Coast Guard is actively patrolling the maritime borders on the Bering Sea, Bering Strait, and Chukchi Sea to protect US sovereign interests, safeguard fish stocks, and promote maritime norms.
