Thirteen students at Benaras Hindu University have faced suspensions ranging from 15 to 30 days for what the administration describes as 'indiscipline' and 'disruption of the academic environment' during protests against a gang-rape that occurred on the university's IIT campus last year.
The suspended students, part of various student organizations, were peacefully demonstrating when the situation intensified. The university administration responded by setting up a standing committee to investigate the incident leading to the suspensions, as confirmed by Assistant Press Relation Officer Chandra Shekhar.
The suspension has led to significant backlash from student activists, who argue that the administration's response was excessive and failed to adequately support victims of sexual violence. The gang-rape complaint led to the arrest of three individuals, prompting criticism of the state government's handling of law and order, particularly given the accused's alleged connections to the ruling party.
