In a controversial move, Srinagar's historic Jama Masjid was sealed by security forces on Shab-e-Baraat, prompting sharp criticism from Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, who called it 'unfortunate.'
Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, scheduled to speak at the mosque, was placed under house arrest, while worshippers were told to vacate the premises during one of the most significant nights in the Islamic calendar.
Despite the closure, thousands of devotees thronged mosques and shrines, with the largest gathering at the Hazratbal shrine, to mark the occasion with prayers for their deceased loved ones.
