In a significant move, two Russian citizens were sentenced to 5-1/2 years of imprisonment in Poland for their involvement with the Russian Wagner Group militia and espionage on behalf of Moscow. This development comes amid heightened tensions as NATO countries face increasing acts of sabotage and subversion linked to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The District Court in Krakow highlighted that the defendants sought to spread anxiety among Polish citizens by suggesting the presence of Wagner Group members within Poland, undermining confidence in local authorities. Both men, apprehended in Warsaw in August 2023, faced charges including foreign intelligence activities and participation in a terrorist organization.

Prosecutors presented evidence of posters with QR codes intended for Wagner recruitment, displayed in Krakow and Warsaw. Similar tactics were reportedly used in France and Germany, targeting Western defence policies. Despite Russia's consistent denials, suspicions linger about Russian agents' involvement in crimes across Europe, including high-profile plots and industrial sabotage.
