The 'United Mothers of Manipur', a prominent women's body, has made a significant call for political change amid the sustained unrest in Manipur. On Saturday, they met with state BJP president A Sharda Devi, presenting demands for the formation of a new government.
This comes after the northeastern state was placed under President's rule on February 13 following the resignation of Chief Minister N Biren Singh. The assembly has since been in suspended animation. The women's group, known locally as 'Apunba Manipur gi Emasing', submitted a detailed memorandum at the state BJP headquarters, including a demand for lifting President's rule, deportation of illegal immigrants, and addressing the plight of internally displaced persons.
Further, the memorandum criticized the arrests of village volunteers and called for the dismantling of the state's poppy plantations. Representative Thongam Ongbi Inaocha Devi noted the BJP's assurance of actions to restore peace while mentioning the unity among BJP MLAs. Since May 2023, ethnic tensions between the Imphal Valley Meiteis and neighboring Kukis have resulted in over 250 deaths and thousands displaced.
