Green Bank Showdown: Nonprofit Sues Trump's EPA Over Frozen Funds
Climate United Fund has sued Trump's EPA for freezing funds granted under the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund. The freeze, linked to accusations of misconduct, could hinder the nonprofit's climate projects. Democrats criticize the these actions, claiming they harm environmental efforts. Citibank is reviewing the lawsuit.
In a move stirring political and environmental tensions, the Climate United Fund is taking legal action against former President Donald Trump's Environmental Protection Agency. The nonprofit claims the agency wrongly froze nearly $7 billion in grants meant for climate-friendly initiatives, jeopardizing the organization's operations and financial stability.
Citibank, involved in holding the funds through the Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund, a program initiated by the Inflation Reduction Act and dubbed the 'green bank,' halted access earlier this year without explanation. Climate United argues this freeze undermines a legally sanctioned congressional initiative designed to fight climate change.
While the current political climate fuels this escalating legal conflict, the EPA and Citibank are under pressure to reassess their actions. The agency, according to the lawsuit, has shunned meetings with the nonprofit, prompting concerns from several Democratic lawmakers. Citibank has stated its intent to comply with the ongoing legal proceedings.
