A Ukrainian woman, sentenced for her involvement in organ trafficking, has been detained by Polish border guards. The 35-year-old, whose name was withheld under Polish privacy laws, had been serving a 12-year sentence in Kazakhstan for trading human organs, prosecutors revealed on Tuesday.
Interpol issued a red notice for her arrest in November 2020, but questions remain about how she evaded imprisonment in Kazakhstan. The Polish prosecutor's office spokesperson, Marta Petkowska, confirmed that the woman was apprehended at a railway crossing between Poland and Ukraine.
Known for her role in an organized group that traded organs from 2017 to 2019, she was involved in harvesting kidneys from victims in multiple countries. Authorities are seeking her extradition back to Kazakhstan to serve her sentence.
