Greece's Defense Modernization: A €25 Billion Arsenal Overhaul
Greece plans to invest over €25 billion by 2036 in an ambitious military modernization project. This includes acquiring new submarines, drones, satellites, and fighter jets to strengthen its armed forces amid ongoing tensions with Turkey. The initiative reflects Greece's efforts to enhance national security post-economic crisis.
Greece is poised to undertake a historic modernization of its defense capabilities, planning an investment exceeding 25 billion euros by 2036. The proposal, set to be presented to parliament, is a strategic move to enhance military strength as the nation recuperates from its prolonged economic downturn.
This defense strategy aims to position Greece competitively against Turkey amidst disputes over sea boundaries, energy resources, and airspace in the eastern Mediterranean. As an EU and NATO member, Greece already allocates nearly double the EU average for defense, reflecting its commitment to robust national security.
The procurement plan involves purchasing advanced military equipment, including submarines, drones, a satellite, an anti-drone defense system, and F-35 jets. Furthermore, Greece plans to upgrade existing fighter jets and frigates, along with the construction of new naval vessels in domestic shipyards.
