In a recent development, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has pardoned 42 individuals previously convicted of extremist offenses, according to the state news agency BELTA.
Although the names of those pardoned were not disclosed, the move comes amid ongoing criticism from rights organizations who point out that Belarus continues to detain hundreds of political prisoners.
Lukashenko, who has governed the country since 1994, is known for prosecuting his political opponents, often on charges related to extremism, and maintaining a strong alliance with Russia.
