In a strong appeal to the United Nations member states, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized the necessity of honoring financial commitments to bolster peacekeeping operations. Speaking at a conference, Guterres highlighted the strength and effectiveness of these missions are intertwined with financial backing from the international community.
Currently managing 11 operations across various global hotspots, the UN has submitted a significantly reduced budget for nine missions for the current fiscal year, stressing the urgent need for member states to contribute. Financial struggles, exacerbated by cuts from major donors, have posed severe liquidity issues, underlining the critical importance of timely and full payments.
Addressing these challenges, German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul asserted Germany's readiness to enhance its funding for peacekeeping. However, he also called for a more strategic approach, advocating for improved efficiency and focus in missions through well-defined mandates and streamlined processes.
