ABM Khairul Haque, a former chief justice of Bangladesh, has been jailed following his arrest in relation to a murder case that emerged during the July uprising in Jatrabari. The shocking development unfolded after law enforcement detained the 81-year-old from his residence and escorted him to the court complex amid tight security.
Haque, who was handcuffed and wore a helmet and bulletproof jacket, appeared before the Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate M Sanaullah. The court ordered his imprisonment regarding the murder of a teenager, Abdul Kaiyum Ahad, during the politically charged upheaval that destabilized Sheikh Hasina's government last year.
This arrest marks the first time in Bangladesh's history that a former chief justice has faced such charges, highlighting the ongoing turbulence in the nation's political scene. Notably, no defense stood for Haque in court, and the prosecution voiced gratitude toward Professor Muhammad Yunus's government for apprehending him.
