In eastern Pakistan, nine individuals, including the father and ex-husband of Sidra Bibi, are under arrest linked to her alleged honour killing. Bibi, aged 18, reportedly fell victim to a grim council order after marrying against her family's wishes in Rawalpindi.
Authorities unraveled a concealment attempt by some relatives, who allegedly buried Bibi's corpse and disguised the burial site. A subsequent autopsy confirmed torture prior to suffocation, sparking outrage nationwide against honour-based violence.
Human Rights Commission of Pakistan reported a worrying rise in honour killings, with 405 cases in 2024 alone, highlighting an entrenched view of women as property. Meanwhile, similar tragedies continue to surface, emphasizing a societal crisis.
