Former CJI Chandrachud Moves Out Amid Housing Controversy

Former Chief Justice of India, D Y Chandrachud, has vacated the official residence assigned to the head of the judiciary in New Delhi. The development follows a controversy regarding his extended stay at the property beyond the permissible period after retirement.

Justice Chandrachud, who served as the 50th Chief Justice, retired on November 8, 2024. In a July 7 statement to PTI, he emphasized that his departure from the residence was delayed due to his daughters' medical needs, as they require wheelchair-accessible housing.

The Supreme Court administration communicated with the Central government, stressing adherence to housing rules. As per judicial regulations, a retired CJI is allowed to stay in a type VII bungalow for six months post-retirement. The request for clearance was sent to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs to return the property to the court's housing pool.
