A senior member of the Islamic State group was captured by a US-led coalition in northwest Syria, according to state media and a war monitor. The incident occurred early Wednesday in Atmeh town, near the Turkish border.
The coalition, reportedly including US troops, conducted the operation before dawn, landing troops from helicopters. An IS commander identified as Abu Hafs al-Qurayshi, an Iraqi national, was captured while another Iraqi citizen was killed during the raid, reported the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
Details remain unclear about the detainee's true identity and whether a French-speaking woman, reportedly present at the scene, was also detained. The operation is part of ongoing efforts against IS, which, despite losing its so-called caliphate, still carries out attacks.
