Sky Conflicts: Tensions Escalate Over Russian Jets' Airspace Incursion Allegations
Russia has dismissed Estonia's allegations that Russian aircraft violated its airspace, accusing the NATO member of intensifying East-West tensions. Estonia claimed that MiG-31 jets entered its airspace, prompting an international discussion. NATO consultations regarding this incident and a previous Polish airspace intrusion are set to occur.
Russia on Monday strongly denied Estonia's claims that Russian military jets breached its airspace the previous week. The Kremlin alleged that the NATO member falsely accused Russia to stir up tensions between the East and the West, without providing evidence.
According to Estonia, three Russian MiG-31 fighter jets entered its airspace without permission, lingering for 12 minutes. This action, Western officials suggested, aimed to assess NATO's resolve. The U.N. Security Council is expected to deliberate on the situation, while NATO Article 4 consultations are set for Tuesday.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov criticized Estonia's accusations, labeling them unsubstantiated. He asserted that Russian pilots adhere to international law, and dismissed the allegations as part of a dangerous strategy to provoke conflict.
