In a significant judicial move, Shyamkanu Mahanta, chief organiser of the Northeast India Festival, has filed a petition in the Supreme Court requesting a transfer of the investigation into singer Zubeen Garg's death from Assam's police to a central body like the CBI or NIA.
Zubeen Garg, a celebrated Assamese singer, tragically passed away in Singapore. Initially reported as a drowning incident, police have since lodged murder charges against his manager and Mahanta, amid widespread allegations of a 'vicious media trial' and 'scapegoating.'
The plea implores the apex court for a fair investigation, given over 54 FIRs targeting Mahanta and claims of an orchestrated media frenzy. The petition suggests central agency oversight to ensure unbiased inquiry.
