The decision by the anti-graft body, Lokpal, to issue a tender for seven luxury BMW cars worth an estimated Rs 5 crore has drawn widespread criticism from opposition parties and anti-corruption activists. They argue that the move diverts focus from the institution's primary function of fighting corruption.
According to the tender, each BMW 3 Series 330Li, priced at approximately Rs 69.5 lakh in Delhi, is intended to serve one of Lokpal's current members, including the Chairman and six other appointed personnel. Critics have labeled this purchase a 'display of extravagance' that undermines the institution's integrity.
Public interest lawyer Prashant Bhushan and Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed openly condemned this action, questioning the Lokpal's effectiveness. They highlight that such luxury spending contradicts the values inspired by the 'India Against Corruption' movement that led to the Lokpal's establishment.
