The crackdown on illegal codeine-containing cough syrup distribution intensifies as the food and drugs department in Uttar Pradesh files legal cases against 12 additional pharmaceutical companies. This is part of an ongoing investigation in Varanasi.

Earlier, 26 firms were already under scrutiny for their involvement in the smuggling racket. Inspector Janab Ali disclosed that cases against these companies were initiated on November 15 after suspicious activity was detected.

Inspections revealed that these latest firms were either closed or had different businesses operating at their addresses. Notices were issued for clarification, but due to a lack of response, cases were filed at the Kotwali police station.
