In a significant crackdown on cybercrime, Swiss and German law enforcement agencies have shut down Cryptomixer.io, a major platform used for anonymizing illicit bitcoin transactions. The collaborative effort involved Germany's federal investigation agency BKA, regional prosecutors in Frankfurt, and authorities in Zurich.
Cryptomixer.io, operational since 2016, had become one of the largest bitcoin mixers, amassing billions of euros primarily from illegal activities. The service facilitated the anonymization of crypto transactions by separating and intermixing them with other funds, complicating tracking efforts.
Led by Zurich law enforcement, the operation resulted in the confiscation of servers, the internet domain, and over 12 terabytes of data, along with Bitcoins worth over 25 million euros. These findings are expected to aid ongoing cybercrime investigations. Europol, along with EU and U.S. agencies, played a crucial role in this major bust targeting cybercrime facilitators.
