A dual national holding European citizenship is on trial in Iran, facing charges of espionage for Israel, the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported, without revealing the defendant's identity. The individual, who entered Iran a month before a brief conflict involving Israel and the U.S., was detained by the Revolutionary Guards.
According to the Alborz provincial attorney general, sophisticated spy and intelligence equipment was found at the defendant's villa in Karaj. The charges include 'waging war against God' and 'corruption on earth,' which could lead to severe penalties, including death.
The Iranian Revolutionary Guards have recently detained numerous dual nationals and foreigners on similar charges. Some rights groups and Western officials accuse Iran of using these arrests for political leverage, a claim Tehran denies.
