The Supreme Court announced it will hear the bail plea of Kashmiri separatist leader Shabir Ahmed Shah on January 7. Shah has been implicated in a terror funding case, challenging the Delhi High Court's decision to deny him bail. The court decision follows the National Investigation Agency's (NIA) request for adjournment to allow Solicitor General Tushar Mehta to argue for the agency.
Justice Vikram Nath and Justice Sandeep Mehta have emphasized that no further adjournments will be allowed. Shah has been in custody since June 2019, and his trial continues with a total of 248 witnesses, only 30 of whom have been examined so far. The NIA has dropped 95 witnesses and might reduce the number further.
Shah is accused of facilitating a separatist movement in Jammu and Kashmir, allegedly raising funds for militant activities through hawala transactions and cross-LoC trade. He was arrested in 2019, and his involvement in multiple criminal cases related to Jammu and Kashmir's secession efforts has been noted.
