On Tuesday, IUML MP Harees Beeran expressed grave concerns over the staggering number of suicides tied to marriage-related issues in India. Citing NCRB data, he noted that 1,71,418 deaths in 2023 were attributed primarily to marital problems.
Speaking during Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha, Beeran called the situation a 'moral, legal, and institutional failure' and urged immediate action beyond current legal frameworks. Traditionally viewed as sacred, marriage, for many women, becomes a phase of suffering, due to dowry demands and neglect.
Beeran underscored India's strong legal provisions for protecting married women but criticized poor implementation and occasional misuse. Highlighting socioeconomic factors and emotional neglect, he called for sensitive enforcement, institutional accountability, and social reforms, emphasizing the urgent need for supportive community networks.
