Snapdeal Penalized for Non-Compliant Toy Sales

The Central Consumer Protection Authority fined Snapdeal Rs 5 lakh for selling toys without the Bureau of Indian Standards certification, breaching the Toys (Quality Control) Order, 2020. Notices were also sent to Amazon, Flipkart, and sellers. Snapdeal must ensure compliance and improve consumer grievance mechanisms.

The Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA) has levied a Rs 5 lakh fine on Snapdeal for marketing toys lacking the mandatory Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification. This action underlines Snapdeal's violation of the Toys (Quality Control) Order, 2020.

In her statement to PTI, CCPA Chief Commissioner Nidhi Khare revealed that the order against Snapdeal was made post suo-motu cognizance of this breach. Alongside, Amazon, Flipkart, and sellers like Stallion Trading Company and Electronics Bazar Store have been issued similar notices.

Beyond the financial penalty, Snapdeal is mandated to ensure future adherence to BIS standards by abstaining from listing non-compliant toys. The platform must also clearly display customer support contact details for better consumer grievance redressal.
