Foreign Minister Winston Peters has announced two senior diplomatic appointments, strengthening New Zealand’s engagement in the Pacific and Latin America.

Georgina Roberts has been appointed as New Zealand’s next High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea, while Aramiro Tai Rākena will take up the role of Ambassador to Brazil.

Strengthening Pacific Partnerships

Papua New Guinea is one of New Zealand’s most significant Pacific partners, with close cooperation across development, security, trade and regional stability.

The appointment of a new High Commissioner comes at a time of increased strategic focus on the Pacific, as New Zealand works alongside regional partners to support economic resilience, climate adaptation, governance and security cooperation.

Ms Roberts will represent New Zealand’s interests in Port Moresby, leading diplomatic engagement and supporting collaboration across government, business and community sectors.

Expanding Ties in Latin America

Brazil, the largest economy in Latin America, is a key partner for New Zealand in trade, agriculture, education and multilateral engagement.

As Ambassador to Brazil, Mr Tai Rākena will lead New Zealand’s diplomatic mission in Brasília, advancing bilateral trade opportunities and deepening political and economic links across the region.

Brazil’s influence within global forums, including climate and environmental negotiations, also makes the relationship strategically important for New Zealand’s wider foreign policy objectives.

Reinforcing Global Engagement

Mr Peters said the appointments reflect the Government’s commitment to advancing New Zealand’s interests abroad and strengthening relationships in strategically important regions.

High Commissioners and Ambassadors play a critical role in promoting New Zealand’s trade, supporting citizens overseas, advancing foreign policy priorities and representing the country’s values on the international stage.

Both appointments are expected to take effect later this year.
