The Supreme Court on Wednesday granted bail to Ashpak Basha Makandar, an accused in the 2024 Pune Porsche accident case, on the grounds of parity. Makandar, who had been jailed for 20 months, was implicated in facilitating a conspiracy to tamper with medical evidence by swapping blood samples of minors involved in the incident with those of adults.
The case centers around a tragic accident on May 19, 2024, in Pune's Kalyani Nagar, where a Porsche driven by a 17-year-old allegedly under the influence of alcohol fatally struck two IT professionals. The court had earlier granted bail to three other accused, observing that parental negligence contributes to such juvenile incidents.
This controversial case has seen significant legal battles, including bail denials and approvals, as well as nationwide outcry over lenient treatments towards the juvenile. The Bombai High Court and the Juvenile Justice Board have faced criticism over their earlier decisions, prompting the Pune police to appeal against them.
