Women's Quota or Political Ploy? Left Leaders Slam New Delimitation Plans

Leftist leaders on Thursday voiced strong opposition to the Indian government's recent proposal that ties women's reservation in legislative bodies to a fresh delimitation process. They condemned the move as a tactical ploy to recalibrate India's political landscape under the guise of advocating women's rights.
The government introduced the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, aiming to reserve one-third of seats for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, pending a delimitation exercise based on the 2011 Census. Critics, such as CPI-M's M A Baby, argue this strategy deviates from previous, more straightforward paths to ensure women's representation.
Furthermore, Baby and CPI's D Raja raised concerns about potential gerrymandering and claimed that the process could disproportionately benefit northern states, undermining representation for southern and northeastern regions. They urged immediate implementation, criticizing the ruling party for leveraging the proposal to centralize authority and marginalize opposition voices.
