Union Home Minister Amit Shah has sharply criticized Congress and its allies following the defeat of a constitutional amendment bill aimed at securing 33% reservation for women in legislative bodies before the 2029 parliamentary elections.

The contentious bill failed to pass in the Lok Sabha, where it fell short of the two-thirds majority needed for approval. Shah accused Congress and its allies of opposing women's interests and warned that this decision would have political repercussions.

The proposed amendment, which sought to increase Lok Sabha seats and enable the operationalization of women's reservation following a delimitation exercise, garnered support from 298 members but was resisted by 230, a significant setback for women's representation, according to Shah.
