BHP faced a legal setback as London's Court of Appeal upheld a decision holding the mining giant liable for the 2015 Fundao dam collapse in Brazil. The disaster, one of Brazil's worst environmental catastrophes, resulted in significant loss of life and environmental degradation.

The ruling prevents BHP from appealing the case, despite the company arguing that the lawsuit duplicated legal proceedings already underway in Brazil. Earlier, Brazil signed a 170 billion reais ($34.61 billion) compensation deal with BHP, Vale, and Samarco.

Pogust Goodhead, representing the claimants, hailed the decision as a victory for victims. While around 240,000 claimants have been compensated in Brazil, further trials to determine damages are scheduled to begin in April 2027.
