India Sees Notable Decline in Crime Rate in 2024

India experienced a significant reduction in crime rates in 2024, with incidents decreasing by 6% compared to 2023. 'Hurt' and 'Crime against women' cases notably declined, attributed to changes in legal codes. Murder rates slightly fell by 2.4%, with 'disputes' as a leading motive behind crimes.

According to the latest data from the National Crime Records Bureau, India recorded a significant decline in crime rates in 2024, with a total of 58.85 lakh crimes, marking a 6% decrease from 2023's figure of 62.41 lakh cases.

The crime rate, calculated per lakh population, dropped from 448.3 in 2023 to 418.9 in 2024. Notable decreases were observed in 'Hurt' cases, which fell by 30.58% following changes in legal codes that made simple 'Hurt' a non-cognisable offence.

Additionally, crimes against women decreased by 1.5% and murder cases saw a marginal 2.4% drop, with 'disputes' being a leading factor. Crimes against Scheduled Castes and Tribes also declined, indicating a broad positive trend in crime reduction.
