Charged alongside her partner, Yaoning Sun, Wang's case highlights the risks of foreign influence in U.S. politics and reinforces the DOJ's commitment to safeguard democracy.
In a stark reminder of the dangers of foreign influence in U.S. politics, Eileen Wang, former mayor of Arcadia, California, has agreed to plead guilty to charges of acting as an illegal agent for China, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.
Federal prosecutors revealed Wang's collaboration with her then-fiance, Yaoning 'Mike' Sun, in advancing Chinese interests through pro-China propaganda within the United States between late 2020 and 2022. Wang's plea, expected to be formally entered in Los Angeles' federal court, carries a potential 10-year prison sentence.
This development underscores the Department of Justice's unwavering resolve to counteract foreign efforts aimed at undermining democratic institutions. 'Elected officials must serve their constituents, not foreign powers,' asserted Assistant Attorney General John A. Eisenberg.
