In a significant move aimed at accelerating science-driven development in the Northeast, Meghalaya Cabinet Minister and Chairman Incharge State Projects, Alexander Laloo Hek, held an extensive meeting with Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science & Technology, Earth Sciences, and several key departments, Dr Jitendra Singh, to discuss expanding Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) initiatives for tribal communities across the region.
The high-level interaction focused on strengthening the implementation of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Hubs under the Department of Science & Technology (DST), Government of India. These hubs are designed to improve the socio-economic conditions of Scheduled Tribe communities by integrating scientific knowledge, modern technologies and innovation-based livelihood opportunities into grassroots development programmes.
During the discussions, Dr Jitendra Singh reiterated the Narendra Modi government's commitment to ensuring that the benefits of modern science and technological advancement reach even the remotest tribal and underserved regions of the country. He underlined that innovation has emerged as a powerful tool for inclusive growth, particularly in areas where traditional economic opportunities remain limited.
According to the Union Minister, the STI Hub initiative is intended to bridge the gap between scientific institutions and tribal populations by promoting community-centric solutions tailored to local needs. The programme works through collaborations involving research institutions, educational bodies, local administrations, NGOs and community stakeholders to create sustainable development models.
Dr Singh highlighted that the initiative not only promotes technological interventions but also focuses on skill development, entrepreneurship generation, value addition to local resources, and strengthening grassroots innovation ecosystems. He stated that tribal communities possess rich traditional knowledge which, when combined with scientific support and modern technology, can generate substantial economic and social benefits.
The Union Minister further informed that the Department of Science & Technology has already established 53 STI Hubs across different States and Union Territories, including several locations in the Northeastern region. These hubs have been working in sectors such as agriculture, food processing, bamboo technology, handicrafts, healthcare, renewable energy, natural resource management and digital literacy.
He emphasized that the government aims to create technology-enabled livelihood models that are region-specific and environmentally sustainable, particularly in ecologically sensitive areas like the Northeast. The Ministry is also encouraging youth participation and local innovation to ensure long-term community ownership of development initiatives.
Alexander Laloo Hek, during the meeting, presented Meghalaya's immense potential for science-led community development programmes. He noted that the State's rich biodiversity, traditional knowledge systems, agricultural practices and skilled tribal workforce create ideal conditions for implementing innovation-based projects that can improve employment generation and rural livelihoods.
The Meghalaya Minister also stressed the importance of improving institutional coordination between Central scientific agencies and local stakeholders in the Northeast. He advocated for enhanced outreach programmes, technical training initiatives and infrastructure support to ensure that tribal populations can fully benefit from national science and technology schemes.
Sources familiar with the discussions said the meeting also explored possibilities for expanding technology interventions in sectors such as organic farming, climate-resilient agriculture, eco-tourism, food preservation, digital education and sustainable entrepreneurship in Meghalaya and neighbouring Northeastern States.
Dr Jitendra Singh encouraged Meghalaya and other Northeastern States to actively participate in the STI Hub programme and urged State authorities to prepare detailed proposals in coordination with DST officials for future collaborations and project expansion. He assured continued support from the Centre for initiatives aimed at empowering tribal communities through scientific innovation and technology-based development.
The interaction reflects the Centre's broader strategy of integrating the Northeast more deeply into India's scientific and innovation ecosystem. In recent years, the government has increased investments in infrastructure, connectivity, digital access and research-based initiatives in the region as part of its Act East and inclusive development policies.
At the conclusion of the meeting, Alexander Laloo Hek extended an invitation to Dr Jitendra Singh to visit Meghalaya in connection with the upcoming welfare and developmental programmes in the State. The visit, if finalised, is expected to further strengthen collaboration between the Centre and the State on science-driven developmental initiatives.
The meeting is being viewed as an important step towards harnessing science and innovation as instruments of empowerment for tribal communities, while also reinforcing the Northeast's growing role in India's development agenda.
