Italy Appeals for Release of Activists on Hunger Strike in Libya
Italy is urging the release of two Italian pro-Palestinian activists detained in Libya, along with eight others, who are on a hunger strike. The activists, part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, were detained in May while attempting to bring aid to Gaza, and their health is critically deteriorating.
Italy issued an urgent appeal on Friday for the release of two Italian pro-Palestinian activists held in eastern Libya, along with eight other hunger-striking volunteers. The group has been refusing food and water for four days.
The detainees, part of the Global Sumud Flotilla, were apprehended in May while attempting to deliver aid to the Gaza Strip. They were detained for immigration violations when approaching the Libyan city of Sirte to negotiate safe passage.
With health conditions deteriorating, the activists are reportedly being held in isolated facilities by the Libyan Interior Ministry. Global Sumud Flotilla calls for immediate, unconditional release and access for independent medical monitors.
