Union Home Minister Amit Shah has called for a stronger and more integrated approach to border security in Tripura, stressing that safeguarding international borders requires the active involvement of local administration, security agencies and communities living in border areas. Shah made the remarks while chairing a high-level meeting in Salbagan, Tripura, attended by Chief Minister Manik Saha, senior state officials, district magistrates and superintendents of police from all eight border districts.
Border Security Must Be a Shared Responsibility
During the meeting, the Home Minister said border protection cannot be viewed solely as the responsibility of security forces. He described it as a territorial responsibility that requires coordination between district administrations, local governance structures and the Border Security Force (BSF). Shah emphasised the need for a foolproof security grid that combines the efforts of district magistrates, police officials, village-level functionaries, modern surveillance technologies and BSF personnel. According to him, effective border management goes beyond physical fencing and requires a comprehensive defence system that can respond quickly to emerging threats.
He noted that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, strengthening border areas has remained a top national priority, with a focus on both security and development.
Focus on Technology and Crime Prevention
The Home Minister directed officials to implement the Ministry of Home Affairs' CCTV model in Tripura on a priority basis. He also instructed that surveillance cameras operated by the BSF be upgraded and integrated with district administration systems to improve information sharing and response capabilities.
Shah also called for intensified action against drug trafficking and illegal arms smuggling, which continue to pose challenges in border regions. He urged authorities to conduct regular operations and dismantle the entire network involved in such activities rather than targeting only individual offenders.
To strengthen community awareness, he directed that special camps be organised in border villages to educate residents about the dangers associated with narcotics and illegal weapons. These programmes will involve local police, BSF personnel and revenue officials.
Greater Vigilance on Financial Activities
The Home Minister highlighted the importance of financial monitoring in border districts, describing it as an essential part of national security. He instructed officials to improve financial discipline through better coordination between district administrations and tax authorities. Training programmes for collectors and GST officials were also proposed to strengthen enforcement efforts.
Shah further directed the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) to conduct surveys related to counterfeit currency and called for close scrutiny of suspicious financial transactions in border areas. Officials were asked to maintain strict vigilance over large-scale construction projects, property transactions and land purchases. He also ordered a review of land records covering the last five years to identify any irregularities that may have security implications.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment to strengthening cooperation between central and state agencies. Officials said the government's approach aims to ensure robust border security while supporting the safety, stability and development of communities living along India's international borders.
