Deputy Minister in the Presidency, Kenny Morolong, has highlighted the significance of the Milestones of Freedom Campaign, which government will launch next week. The campaign is timed to coincide with South Africa approaching the 50th anniversary of Youth Day, reflecting on the historic Soweto Student Uprising in 1976. Morolong said the initiative will honour the sacrifices of those who fought for liberation while promoting a deeper understanding of the country's democratic journey and encouraging young people to engage actively in shaping the nation.
He explained that the campaign, coordinated by the Government Communication and Information System under the theme 'Honouring the Past, Delivering the Future,' is a government-wide programme aimed at commemorating significant milestones in South Africa's path to freedom. It will also reaffirm the state's commitment to improving the lives of citizens through meaningful programmes that connect historical memory with present-day civic responsibility.
Nationwide programme to strengthen civic participation
The Milestones of Freedom Campaign will formally launch on 18 June at the Union Buildings in Pretoria, marking the start of a year-long programme. The initiative will celebrate constitutional values, encourage active citizenship, and promote social cohesion across communities. Morolong emphasised that the programme provides a chance for all sectors of society to join government efforts in empowering youth through education, skills development, entrepreneurship, and employment opportunities. He added that observing Youth Month allows the nation to honour the legacy of the youth of 1976 while reflecting on progress made in opening opportunities for younger generations in a democratic South Africa.
During his engagement with the Free State Provincial Executive Council, Morolong underlined the importance of coordinating government communication, nation branding, and community media support to ensure the campaign reaches citizens effectively. Delegates from GCIS, the Media Development and Diversity Agency, and Brand South Africa accompanied him to provide guidance on implementing initiatives that connect communities to the campaign's themes and goals.
Inspiring young people and preserving history
Morolong said the campaign is not only a commemoration of historic events but also a call for young people to participate in nation-building. By understanding the struggles and achievements of past generations, youth are encouraged to contribute positively to their communities and to the country's development. The programme will highlight lessons from history while showcasing examples of civic responsibility, social cohesion, and democratic participation that can guide present and future generations.
Government leaders hope the Milestones of Freedom Campaign will inspire citizens to recognise the importance of freedom, understand the responsibilities of active citizenship, and support initiatives that empower young people. It will also reinforce the message that historical memory and contemporary action are intertwined, and that reflecting on the past can shape a future where opportunities are expanded and democracy is strengthened.
