South African police are going to destroy 30,000 illegal guns confiscated after being used to commit crimes, a police spokesperson said on April 15.
The firearms were used to commit crimes and the cases have been finalized. South African Police Minister Bheki Cele and Commissioner General Khehla Sitole will witness the destruction of the firearms on Wednesday.
"Since the last national firearm destruction on October 27, 2016, the police has seized a large number of illegal firearms through planned operations and thus has resulted in the accumulation in our safe storage facilities," said police spokesperson Vish Naidoo.
In October 2016, the police destroyed over 23,000 guns. Naidoo said that they will continue to fight the proliferation of illegal firearms and ammunition as they pose a threat to the safety and security of the people. He said they are destroying the guns to prevent serious and violent crimes and to stamp the authority of the state, as reported by Xinhua.
