Zimbabwe-born academic Tererai Trent has been named among the World’s Top 10 Most Inspiring Women “Sculpted for Equal Rights”. She will have her life-size bronze statue erected at the Rockefeller Centre in the City of New York on August 26 during the launch of Statues of Equality.
The monument is intended to recognize Tererai Trent for her role in promoting equality and empowerment for girls and women. It will stand alongside those of other eminent women who have received the same honour, notably Oprah Winfrey, Pink, Nicole Kidman, Jane Goodall, Cate Blanchett, Janet Mock, Tracy Dyson, Cheryl Strayed and Gabby Douglas.
Tererai Trent was born in Zvipani Village in Karoi District, Mashonaland West Province in 1965. Despite the fact she and her family suffered poverty during her childhood, her brother Tinashe was allowed to go to school for studies but she was not allowed for being a girl.
Jo Luck from Heifer International visited Trent’s village in Zimbabwe and questioned every woman about their greatest dreams. Trent said that she wanted to go to America and receive a Bachelor, Master and PhD degrees. She moved to Oklahoma in 1998 with her husband when she was also having five children.
Three years later since her relocation, she earned a bachelor’s degree in agricultural education and then received master’s degree. She also earned her doctorate from Western Michigan University in December 2009. She made a thesis on HIV/AIDS prevention programs for women and girls in sub-Saharan Africa.
