In the wake of significant gains in both the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections, the Andhra Pradesh BJP unit is actively pursuing a cabinet berth at the Centre. Reports suggest that the state may get 'ample' representation in the upcoming cabinet reshuffle.
BJP insiders revealed that a formal request has been conveyed to senior party leadership through Shiv Prakash, the national joint general secretary, for a cabinet position for one of the Lok Sabha members from Andhra Pradesh.
'This moment presents a unique opportunity to expand BJP's footprint in Andhra Pradesh and affirm the party's commitment to the state. A message has been dispatched to the top brass,' sources within the party stated to PTI.
State BJP President D Purandeswari, who secured a substantial victory in the Rajamahendravaram constituency, is being seen as the top contender for the cabinet berth. Purandeswari's success highlights the party's improved performance, elevating its vote share from less than one percent in 2019 to 11.28 percent, winning three Lok Sabha and eight assembly seats.
The collaborative seat-sharing agreement among NDA allies saw the TDP contest the majority of constituencies while BJP fielded candidates in select seats. The TDP emerged victorious with 135 assembly seats, with allies BJP and Janasena capturing 8 and 21 seats, respectively. In the Lok Sabha polls, TDP secured 16 seats, BJP three, and Janasena two.
The BJP, which previously had two Lok Sabha members between 2014 and 2019 but none in the following term, is looking to reestablish its presence. By offering tickets to newcomers, the party aims to attract disgruntled leaders from rival parties, particularly the YSR Congress, which suffered a significant defeat.
