BJP Nominates Bahoran Lal Maurya for UP Legislative Council Bypoll

The BJP has nominated Bahoran Lal Maurya for the July 12 bypoll to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council. State minister Arun Saxena noted that Maurya, twice elected from Bhojipura, lost to SP's Shazil Islam in the 2022 elections. The bypoll follows the resignation of SP MLC Swami Prasad Maurya.

In a key political move, the BJP on Monday announced Bahoran Lal Maurya as its candidate for the July 12 bypoll to the Uttar Pradesh Legislative Council.

According to state minister Arun Saxena, Maurya has previously been elected to the legislative assembly from the Bhojipura constituency twice, in 1996 and 2017. However, he faced a setback in the 2022 legislative assembly elections, losing to Shazil Islam of the Samajwadi Party (SP) by a margin of over 9,400 votes.

This by-election comes on the heels of the resignation of SP MLC Swami Prasad Maurya, who left the BJP to join the SP before the 2022 assembly elections. Maurya contested from the Fazilnagar Assembly seat in Kushinagar and was defeated. Subsequently, he joined and then resigned from the SP due to internal opposition regarding his comments on 'Sanatan Dharma,' leading him to form the Rashtriya Shoshit Samaj Party. The Election Commission has set the timeline for the bypoll, with nominations closing on July 2 and the vote counting scheduled for July 12.
