The US House of Representatives has announced the formation of a 13-member bipartisan congressional task force to investigate the attempted assassination of former president and Republican Party nominee Donald Trump.

On July 13, Trump, 78, narrowly escaped death when a 20-year-old assailant opened fire at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, injuring Trump's right ear, killing one attendee, and seriously wounding two others. The shooter was subsequently neutralized by a Secret Service agent.

'We have the utmost confidence in this bipartisan group of steady, highly qualified, and capable Members of Congress to move quickly to find the facts, ensure accountability, and help make certain such failures never happen again,' House Speaker Mike Johnson and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries stated.

The task force, led by Congressman Mike Kelly, will examine the failures of the security detail and propose reforms to prevent similar incidents. The group has also received backing from Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green, who emphasized its importance in addressing security oversights.
