Imran Khan Seeks Bail in May 9 Riot Cases
Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan is seeking bail in 12 cases tied to the May 9 riots of last year. Khan argues the cases are politically motivated with no recoverable evidence. Recently, the Lahore High Court annulled his physical remand orders in several related cases.
Former Pakistani Prime Minister and PTI founder, Imran Khan, has filed for bail in 12 cases linked to last year's May 9 riots, as per a media report released on Tuesday.
Led by lawyer Salman Safdar, Khan's legal team submitted the petitions, arguing that there is no recoverable evidence and labeling the cases as politically motivated retaliation.
Recently, the Lahore High Court provided relief by nullifying Khan's physical remand in several cases related to the May 9 violence. The court noted Khan would remain in judicial custody despite this ruling.
The riots had erupted nationwide following Khan's arrest by the National Accountability Bureau in a 190-million-pound corruption case. He now faces over 200 cases and has been jailed since August last year.
Khan remains imprisoned at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi after his conviction in three cases, including the Toshakhana corruption case. Despite securing bail or having his convictions set aside in some cases, he has not been released, with PTI alleging the military establishment's influence in his continued detention.
